Microneedling is not a treatment that is as frightening as it sounds. Instead, this treatment harnesses the power of nature within our bodies to bring us brighter, smoother, clearer young-looking skin.
It is also the oldest aesthetic treatment we have had since ancient times, which benefits from microchannel trauma to the skin to bring about youthful looks.
So how does it work?
Microneedling creates multiple channels in the skin with a small pen device. The pen is loaded with tiny needles, and the small micro punctures initiate the healing cascade within the body.
The skin recognises the minor trauma created in the skin, and fibroblasts rush to the area. The fibroblasts initiate the production of collagen and elastin as part of the healing process; because of the number of microchannels, the amount of collagen and elastin produced is significant.
This increased collagen elastin in the skin reveals plumper, smoother, younger-looking skin. As we age, the presence of collagen decreases along with our ability to produce it; therefore, the increased amount of collagen produced by micro-needling and healing cascades improves the appearance of the skin.
This treatment is not painful; some areas are more sensitive than others. Anaesthetic/numbing cream helps with any discomfort in those areas. Next, the skin is cleansed and prepared ready for microneedling.
The treatment sensation feels like a slight buzzing over the skin. The penetration depth of the new pen device used to administer microneedling can be adapted for more sensitive areas that don't need very deep needling. You can turn down the pen to accommodate these areas. On the other side, the depth can be increased for deeper penetration in areas where we need more collagen, for example, the cheeks.
After the procedure, the skin may feel warm and look pink, like sunburn for 24 hours, or you may not feel much at all. Therefore, looking after the skin and applying SPF for at least two weeks following the procedure is essential. However, if we are carrying out treatments to improve the production of collagen elastin, then to reduce the sun's rays getting through to the skin's dermis and breaking down collagen, it would be best to apply SPF EVERY DAY.
Results of microneedling reveal smoother, plumper, radiant, and more even skin tone with fewer lines and wrinkles. These are usually seen within around six weeks because our collagen elastin production cycle takes around six weeks. Therefore, I recommend that microneedling is carried out as a course of three treatments, six weeks apart, because of the collagen cycle.
Microneedling can be used together with other treatments, such as botulinum toxin or dermal filler, to improve the outcome of the treatments and the appearance of the skin. Or as a standalone treatment for those who want a less invasive or natural skin rejuvenation.
The treatment has become prevalent due to its natural and subtle changes. In addition, the increased production of collagen also helps to slow down the ageing process.
